Ashleigh Wilson sits tied for 30th to lead the Bobcats in Hawaii
'AIEA, Hawaii --- The Montana State women's golf team concluded the opening two rounds of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational at the Pearl at Kalauao on Tuesday evening, carding a 36-hole score of 601 to open the tournament.
The Bobcats posted rounds of 302 and 299 on the par-71 course to finish the tournament's first day in 10thplace against a strong field in 'Aiea, Hawaii. Ashleigh Wilson leads the Bobcats in a tie for 30th place at 5-over 147 after 36 holes, Maddie Montoya sits tied for 41st at 9-over 151, Norah Seidl holds a 162 for a share of 46th, Lauren Greeny is tied for 49th with a 153, and Eva Heinz rounds out the five Bobcat starters with a 155 for a share of 59th place. Sailor Graham and Lauren Nau are tied for 71st and 74th, respectively, carding scores of 163 and 168 while competing individually.
"Again, we played gritty, but needed a few more putts to drop," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We had too many bogeys and not enough birdies to get us into better numbers. Ashleigh and Maddie shooting 1-over is a good round. The course is really wet, so trying to judge yardages was a little tough. The good thing is we get to play one more round tomorrow. We need to play hard and make some putts."
Montana State counted a 72 from Wilson, a 75 from Seidl, a 76 from Greeny, and a 79 from Montoya in the first round as the Bobcats concluded the first round in 11th place with a team score of 302. After bogeying on hole 11 to start the day, Wilson posted a birdie on No. 12 followed by seven-straight pars before recording another birdie on No. 2. She then posted six pars on her final eight holes to conclude the opening round at a 1-over 72. Seidl sunk birdies on Nos. 15 and 2 while going bogey-free on her final five holes during her round of 75. Greeny sunk eight-straight pars to end her round, and Montoya carded four in a row on Nos. 3 through 6, also adding a birdie on No. 16. Heinz posted an 80 to round out the team golfers' first-round scores.
Montoya led the way for the Bobcats in the second round with a 72, opening the round with a birdie on hole 10 and going bogey-free on all but two holes during her second trip around the course. Wilson and Heinz each counted a 75, with Wilson posting birdies on Nos. 5, 6, and 11 and Heinz adding two of her own on Nos. 7 and 17. Seidl and Greeny each carded a 77 as Greeny sunk three birdies and Seidl added one.
Individually, Graham carded an 85 in the first round before improving to a 78 during the second round. Nau posted rounds of 81 and 87 to open her tournament in Hawaii.
No. 2 USC holds a comfortable lead over the rest of the field, posting a 36-hole score of 22-under 546 to lead No. 23 Arizona State (6-under 562) by 16 strokes. Texas State sits in third at 5-under 563, with No. 13 North Carolina close behind in fourth at 2-under 566.
