MSU looks to extend hot start to conference play
Montana State looks to extend its hot start in Big Sky play on Friday morning, when the Bobcat men's tennis team hosts Idaho State at 10 am.
The Bobcats, off to a 2-0 start in Big Sky play and 4-4 overall, face a Bengals squad that remains something of an unknown in 2015. ISU has played just one match on the season, a 7-0 loss to nationally-ranked Utah.
Still, MSU coach Jared Burnham expects a competitive contest. "Idaho State has some experience and they will compete hard," Burnham said. "I expect a close match, which I think will be a theme throughout the conference."
Senior Javier Martin-Morillas has paced the Bobcats, rolling up a 5-3 record at No. 3 singles. Harry James, a junior, is 5-3 splitting time between No. 4 and No. 5. A trio of newcomers has provided a welcome boost. Transfers Andre Napoliatano (Texas Tech), 4-4 on the season primarily at No. 1 singles, and Kellen Bates (Indiana), who is 4-4 at No. 4 and No. 5, have each played solid tennis.
Burnham has been impressed with his team's improvement in doubles play, which he says is no accident. "We've worked hard on that, and we're seeing improvement," he said.
