Montana State will start its second-round of Big Sky Conference play when it hosts Portland State, Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m., in Worthington Arena.
SECOND TIME AROUND:
Montana State will start its second-round of Big Sky Conference play when it hosts Portland State, Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m., in Worthington Arena. The Bobcats defeated the Vikings 106-59 in Portland on Jan. 9 in the Stott Center. MSU will close out the weekend hosting Sacramento State on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. Montana State escaped the Hornets' Nest with an 80-79 win on Jan. 7. The second half of league play will feature single games (in Bozeman) against Weber State and Idaho State. Eastern Washington and Idaho were Montana State's single game opponents in the first half of Big Sky Conference action.
A CLOSER LOOK:
With its 61-52 win over Montana last Saturday, the Bobcats moved back into a tie with Eastern Washington atop the Big Sky Conference standings. The Eagles were upset last Thursday by previous winless Portland State 81-79 in the Stott Center. The Vikings are currently 3-16 overall and 1-7 in Big Sky play, good for 11th in the league. Sacramento State, who is 7-12 overall and in sixth place with a 4-4 BSC ledger, plays at Montana on Thursday, before traveling to Bozeman.
MONTANA STATE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Junior Riley Nordgaard had a complete for the Bobcats in its 61-52 victory over Montana on Saturday afternoon. The Canby, Minnesota product posted 11 points, and a team-high nine rebounds, five steals and four assists. She finished the game shooting 56 percent from the field. Nordgaard had an outstanding fourth quarter for MSU as they rallied to the nine-point victory. In the final stanza, Nordgaard notched five points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists.
THE LAST TIME OUT:
The Montana State defense clamped down in the fourth quarter and the Bobcat offense fed off the energy of 3,526 fans in attendance as MSU rallied from a nine-point second half deficit to record a 61-52 victory over Montana in the 100th meeting between the two rivals, Saturday afternoon in Worthington Arena. Peyton Ferris paced Montana State with a team-high 16 points, while Riley Nordgaard 11, Lindsay Stockton 11, and Alexa Dawkins 10 all hit double-figures. Nordgaard, a product of Canby, Minn., also finished with a team-high nine rebounds, five steals and four assists.
THE SCOUTING REPORT:
Portland State (3-16, 1-7) pulled off the biggest upset of the Big Sky Conference season to date with its 81-79 victory over previously unbeaten Eastern Washington on Thursday night in the Stott Center. Against the Eagles, the Vikings had six players in double-figure scoring, including all five starters. Leading the way was Pia Jurhar with 18 points followed by Ashley Torres 16, Michaela Kay and Kian McNair 12, Cici West 11 and Corey James 10. PSU jumped on Eastern Washington early taking a 24-9 lead after the first quarter. The Viks held off a late charging EWU squad that out-scored PSU 29-19 in the final period. On Saturday, the Vikings dropped a 94-65 decision to Idaho. On the season, PSU has been led by McNair and Torres, who average 10.5 and 10.2 points per game, respectively. Under the glass, West guides the team hauling down a whopping 9.5 rebounds per game. Michaela Kay is the Viking's top threat from the outside connecting on 36-of-110 3-pointers this winter. On five occasions this season, Portland State has given up over 100 points, including 106 points to the Bobcats on Jan. 9. In all, the Viking defense is giving up 90.8 points per game, while scoring at a 69.7 points per game clip.
ALL IN THE FAMILY:
Jasmine Hommes became the 21st member of Montana State's prestigious 1,000-point club and the second Hommes to accomplish the milestone in the Blue and Gold. Hommes' Aunt Blythe Hommes-Hintz, recorded a career 1,265 points from 1993-97. Blythe Hommes is currently 12th on MSU's all-time list, after Jasmine Hommes passed her at Idaho on Jan. 23. Jasmine now sits 11th with 1,279 points. Blythe Hommes was the 1997 Big Sky Conference Most Valuable Player and is a member of the Montana State-Wendy's Athletic Hall of Fame. Another aunt, Brooke Hommes-Dunham (1992-96), was a four-time All-Big Sky Conference Academic pick for the 'Cats.
BUELLER, BUELLER, BUELLER, BUELLER:
Montana State junior Peyton Ferris has picked up where she left of last season after being named the Big Sky Conference's Top Reserve. The Twin Bridges product is second on the squad averaging 14.1 points and is second in rebounding at 5.9 rebounds per game. Ferris is also shooting an impressive 60 percent from the field and 77 percent from the charity stripe.
CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK:
Like her dad, NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton, Lindsay Stockton has done an outstanding job distributing and taking care of the basketball. Stockton is second on the team averaging 3.6 assists per game. The Spokane product also set a new career-high with six steals in MSU's opening win at Seattle U.
THE LIFE OF RILEY:
Transfer Riley Nordgaard, who sat out under NCAA rules last winter after coming to MSU from Augustana in South Dakota, has made an impact on the Bobcat squad. The Canby, Minnesota product is averaging 9.9 points and a team-best 6.9 rebounds per game. In addition, she has connected on 29-of-71 three-point attempts shooting 41 percent from beyond the arc. Nordgaard played a big role in MSU's win over Montana with 11 points, nine rebounds, five steals, four assists and a blocked shot.
FATHER'S DAY:
Lindsay Stockton is the daughter of legendary NBA Hall of Famer and former Utah Jazz standout John Stockton, while Alexa Dawkins' father Dale played football on the University of Miami's 1987 National Championship team. Dawkins later went on to play wide receiver for the New York Jets from 1990-93.
THE LILAC CITY:
Three Bobcat players are from Spokane, Washington - The Lilac City. Lindsay Stockton, Hannah Caudill and Delany Junkermier combined for 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists and six two 3-pointers against the University of Montana. This winter, Caudill, a graduate of Gonzaga Prep, nailed the decisive 3-pointer with 6.7 seconds remaining at Sacramento State to give the Bobcats the win. She also posted her first double-double of her career dishing out ten assists at Sac State. Fellow Bullpup Lindsay Stockton had a nice game against the Lady Griz with 11 points, three rebounds and three assists. Junkermier, a Mead High School graduate, tallied six points and four rebounds against Montana, all coming in the first half. She finished the game with two triples, giving her 20 on the year.
HARD BLOCK CAFE:
The Bobcats established a new single-game school record against the University of Montana Western on Dec. 15 with 12 blocked shots, including a team-high three swats by senior Jasmine Hommes. The old mark - held three times - was set last against Valparaiso on Dec. 1, 2013.

Montana State set a new school record with 32 assists in its 106-59 win at Portland State on Jan. 9. The old mark of 31 was set against Nevada (1978-88) and Idaho State (2003-04).
