“If we can bring this as a baseline every match, then we’re progressing quickly,” MSU head coach Jon Reeves said. “That’s been our biggest thing, we have been up and down.”
Montana State returned to the tennis courts for the first time since March 10, Saturday afternoon, in Bobcat-Anderson tennis center to take on Southern Utah.
Southern Utah (11-5, 4-0) opened the matches winning No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the opening point of the day against Montana State (3-11, 1-5). Laura Mary and Linnea Fristam won No. 1 doubles defeating Zoe Tanti and Alexandra Ngo 7-5, but the point had already been decided.
In singles, Laura Mary won her fourth match in a row playing at No. 1. She outplayed the Thunderbird's Ghita Nassik in a straight set victory (6-0, 6-0) to tie the team's 1-1.
"I have a lot of confidence right now," Mary said. "I've been winning a few matches in a row now, I hope it can keep going."
Unfortunately for the Bobcats, the Thunderbirds would go on to win No. 3 and No. 4 singles in consecutive matches to take a 3-1 lead.
Bobcat Annie Walker, defeated Zoe Tanti in the No. 2 singles match, 6-3, 6-2. Her victory closed the point gap to 3-2 and gave the MSU No. 5 and No. 6 singles players a chance to take the win for the Bobcats in the last matches of the day.
In the only three-set matches, Bobcat's Sara Iverson at No. 5 and Linda Vink at No. 6 singles battled back from first-set setbacks. Vink's comeback came up just short losing in a third-set tiebreaker against Alexandra Ngo (7-5, 5-7, 13-11). Jessica Stefan defeated Iverson 6-0, 3-6, 6-1, in the match before Vink's to give Southern Utah the decisive 4-2 advantage in scoring on their way a 5-2 victory.
The victory was the Thunderbird's eighth in a row. Bobcat head coach Jon Reeves viewed the highly competitive matches as progress for the young tennis team.
"We had plenty of opportunities today," Reeves said. "We just came up a little shy on a couple of them. Doubles, we've got to come out more in control right away. We've done that really well sometimes this year, other times we have not.
"If we can bring this as a baseline every match, then we're progressing quickly," Reeves added. "That's been our biggest thing, we have been up and down."
MSU goes on the road for its next match this Friday, against Sacramento State at 1 p.m.
