Montana State freshman Maria Villarejo captured the singles title in the Green Draw at the Gonzaga Invitational over the weekend.

Montana State freshman Maria Villarejo captured the singles title in the Green Draw at the Gonzaga Invitational over the weekend. The product of Madrid, Spain, recorded four singles victories, including a 6-3, 6-7, 10-7 win over Idaho State's Luna Urso for the title.

Villarejo opened play with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Idaho's Nicole Horacek, then handed Oregon's Mia Ljubas a 6-4, 6-7(5), 10-6 setback in the quarterfinals. In semifinal play she cruised by Montana's Rosie Sterk to advance to the championship match.

"We are so proud of Maria for her tournament win," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "She was focused from the first day and competed incredibly well. Maria has made great progress this fall and brought up her overall level this weekend."

Also posting a pair of victories for the Bobcats was Andrea Cuquerella. The native of Xativa, Spain recorded a hard-fought 7-6(2), 7-6(6) decision over Eastern Washington's Kenzington Mann and a 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-6 decision over Idaho's Tiegan Aitken. Yolanda Lin of Washington ended Cuquerella' s run in semifinal 4-6, 7-6(4), 10-6.

In doubles action, MSU received a pair of victories. Cuquerella combined with Marta Garcia-Reboredo for a 6-4 win over Idaho's tandem of Olivera and Palma. JJ Chen and Jazmin Lerman also notched a win in doubles, defeating Reguant/Urso, a combined pairing from Montana and ISU.

The Gonzaga Invitational concludes MSU's fall season. The Bobcats open regular season action on Jan. 15 at the Hurricane Invitational in Tulsa, Okla.
