Montana State kicks off the second half of conference play against the Hornets, who are undefeated at home this season.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Kicking off the second half of Big Sky Conference play, the Montana State men's basketball travels to Sacramento State for a Saturday night matchup at 8 p.m. MT.
The game will be live streamed on ESPN+ and a free radio broadcast will be provided on the Bobcat Sports Radio Network. Live stream and live stat links can be found on the men's basketball team's schedule page on msubobcats.com.
Making the turn on the Big Sky Conference season, the second-place Bobcats (14-8, 7-2 Big Sky Conference) will try to hand the fourth-place Hornets (12-9, 5-3 Big Sky) their first home loss. The Hornets are the one conference team MSU hasn't faced yet this season.
The Bobcats have won the last three meetings with the Hornets — including an 83-61 win in the Big Sky Quarterfinals last year. However, Sacramento State has changed quite a bit since then, as former UC Riverside head coach and Arkansas assistant coach David Patrick took the reins of the program during the offseason.
The Hornets are led by fifth-year senior guard Zach Chappell, who leads the team with 14.8 points per game and a team-best six 20-point outings. Senior forward Callum McRae — who started his career playing for Patrick at UC Riverside — nearly averages a double-double with 11.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Standing at 7'1", McRae is also the tallest player in the conference.
With half of the Big Sky Conference games in the books, Montana State is two games back of Eastern Washington, which is a perfect 9-0 in league play. The Bobcats boast arguably the best defense in the league, limiting opponents to Big Sky-low 66.1 points per game on 41.6% from the field (3rd-Big Sky).
Montana State is coming off a 75-66 win at Portland State on Thursday night, in which RaeQuan Battle led the way with 19 points, Caleb Fuller had an MSU-career-best 18 points and Great Osobor notched his second double-double of the season. The Vikings' 66-point showing was their second-lowest scoring output of Big Sky season.
Fuller's 18-point night was his career-best in a Montana State uniform and the sixth time this season he has finished in double-figure scoring. Osobor's 17-point, 10-rebound double-double was invaluable, as Jubrile Belo only played 13 minutes in the win.
The win at Portland State also marked the 70th of Danny Sprinkle's head coaching career. He is two shy of tying his wins as a player; during 1995-99, Sprinkle went 72-47.
Sacramento State, meanwhile, is coming off a 62-48 win over Montana at home on Thursday, in which the Hornet defense held Montana to a season-low 48 points on a mere 38.2% shooting from the field. Cameron Wilbon and Akol Mawein came off the bench to lead SSU with 16 points apiece.
The Bobcats will return home for a Thursday night matchup against Northern Arizona, followed by a Saturday afternoon showdown with Northern Colorado on Feb. 2 and 4, respectively. Both games will be livestreamed on ESPN+, yet Saturday's game against the Bears will also be televised on SWX Sports. All live stream and live stat links can be found on the men's basketball schedule page on msubobcats.com.
