“We are really looking forward to a great weekend of tennis,” Barrett said. “We have had a solid few weeks of practice and we feel confident and ready to put all the hard work into action. This group is hungry and ready to compete.”
First-year Montana State head women's tennis coach Hailey Barrett gets her first glimpse of the 2025-26 squad in a competitive setting as the Bobcats take part in the Jon Messick Invitational – a three-day tournament hosted by Colorado State at the CSU Tennis Complex, beginning Friday at 10 a.m.
"We are really looking forward to a great weekend of tennis," Barrett said. "We have had a solid few weeks of practice and we feel confident and ready to put all the hard work into action. This group is hungry and ready to compete."
Participating in the invitational are MSU, CSU, Wyoming, Utah State, New Mexico State, Air Force, Chicago, Utah and Weber State. Play opens with two rounds of doubles followed by a round of singles on Friday. Saturday follows suit, before concluding with finals matches on Sunday morning.
The Bobcats return three letterwinners who all saw action on MSU's ladder last spring. Junior Angel Bean returns as Montana State's most experienced player. Last season, she played at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles and recorded an overall mark of 7-8.
Nia Gelashvili and Kavya Khirwar have played one season for the Bobcats. Gelashvili, a sophomore from Tbilisi, Georgia, went 7-6 at Nos. 3 and 4 singles. In her first week as a Bobcat last winter, Gelashvili captured Big Sky Conference Player of the Week honors.
Khirwar, a senior from New Delhi, India, played at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles where she posted a 5-7 overall singles ledger.
Barrett also welcomes three newcomers in freshmen Lola Bean and Terezie Stverakova, along with Catawba College transfer Anna Wise.
The CSU Invitational kicks off MSU's fall season which includes tournament play at Boise State and Gonzaga as well as the ITA Mountain Regional Championships in Provo, Utah.
