Despite its fourth place tie, the Bobcats will be the No. 5 seed on Friday.
The Montana State women's tennis team will ride a four-match win streak into the Big Sky Conference Tournament, which begins Friday at 11 a.m. (MST) on the courts of the Gold River Racquet Club in Sacramento, Calif.
Montana State (9-10, 6-4) was picked to finish sixth in the preseason coach's poll, but finished tied for fourth in the win column with Northern Colorado and Portland State. The Bobcats knocked off the Bears 5-2 and the Vikings 7-0 this spring.
Despite its fourth place tie, the Bobcats will be the No. 5 seed on Friday. Portland State, who had to cancel its match with undefeated and Big Sky regular-season champ Montana due to bad weather, will be the No. 4 seed and face the Bobcats in the opening-round. The UM-PSU match was never made-up, and based on PSU's winning percentage on a 6-3 league slate, will wear the home uniform.
The other first-round match will feature No. 3 Sacramento State and No. 6 UNC. No. 1 Montana and No. 2 Northern Arizona will have first-round byes. Semifinal matches will be held on Saturday, with the championship tilt slated for 11 a.m. on Sunday.
MSU enters the Big Sky Tournament winning five of its last six matches, with its lone setback a 4-3 decision at Idaho State. The Bobcats are 3-2 against the tournament field. Montana State has not lost in April as seniors Paulina Lopez, Ellie Crum and Wena Tsan have combined to go 19-11 in singles action over the past ten matches.
Crum, a product of Great Falls High, has rattled off four straight wins, mainly playing at No. 4 singles. In addition, Crum has teamed with freshman Laura Middel and the duo has established themselves as the best in the league at the No. 2 spot. Crum and Middel are on a current 12-match win streak; are 13-2 overall and 9-1 in Big Sky action.
Lopez and Tsan have each gone 7-3 in singles play since Feb. 22. Lopez has MSU's best record with a 12-6 slate, most coming at No. 3 singles. Tsan posted a 6-4 mark at No. 5 singles for the Bobcats.
Along with the trio of seniors, three freshmen will also be in MSU's top six on Friday morning. Middel will play at No. 1 singles, while Molly Crum and Jessica Brycki will play at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, respectively.
Bobcat head coach Denise Albrecht is making her 13th appearance at the Big Sky Tournament in her 14-year tenure with the Blue and Gold. Albrecht was the 2007 Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year.
